Ūrdhvatāṇḍavamūrti .—Śiva as master of dance is known as Naṭarāja. The Lord presenting the ānandatāṇḍava is a popular theme in Cōla bronzes. The Lord performing urdhvatāṇḍava, lalāṭatilaka or koṭukoṭṭī is known as ūrdhvatāṇḍavamūrti. He is said to have enacted this karaṇa in order to curb the pride of Kālī, his rival in dance, according to the Tiruvālaṅkāṭu and Citamparam sthalamahātmyas. This Śaivite theme appears in the Pallava temple of Kāñcīpuram.
